Medical Nutrition Therapy
Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is an important component of diabetes self management that has been shown to decrease A1C by approximately 2% among people with newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes and by 1% among people with newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes. The goals of medical nutrition therapy for individuals with diabetes are: 1) to attain and maintain optimal metabolic control; 2) to prevent and treat all diabetes complications; 3) to improve health through healthy food choices; and 4) to address individual nutritional needs, taking into account personal preferences, cultural preferences, lifestyle, and willingness to change.
Type 2 Diabetes in Youth - The Importance of Lifestyle
The twin epidemics of obesity and Type 2 diabetes are increasing at alarming rates. The epidemiological estimates and projections paint a grim picture, especially for children and adolescents, who are being diagnosed with these conditions more frequently than ever before. Although behavior changes are notoriously difficult to make and even harder still to sustain, a variety of behavioral strategies can be used to promote weight loss, prevent weight gain, and increase physical activity.
Physical Activity and Lifestyle Management
Individuals with diabetes can experience diabetes-specific benefits of physical activity, including lowered A1C and reduced insulin requirements. Those with diabetes can exercise safely if the proper self-management strategies and the proper precautions are employed. Before beginning any exercise program, a thorough screening for cardiovascular disease, peripheral arterial disease, retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy should be undertaken.
