Epidemiology and Disease Pathology of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as carbohydrate intolerance that is first detected during pregnancy, and it includes previously undiagnosed diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Approximately 7% of all pregnancies are complicated by GDM, totaling more than 200,000 cases annually. Pregnancy is a diabetogenic state. The exact cause of gestational diabetes is not known, but there are some theories as to why the condition occurs.
