Epidemiology and Disease Pathology of Type 1 Diabetes
Formerly known as juvenile-onset diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), type 1 diabetes is the most common metabolic illness affecting children, with a yearly incidence of 82,000 cases in those under 14 years of age. Type 1 diabetes is characterized by the functional absence of insulin resulting from the selective destruction of pancreatic ß cells and may be inherited, caused by exposure to viruses, or related to diet.
