Introduction

Julia A Haller, MD

Dr Haller introduced the symposium with a brief review of the current epidemiological statistics for diabetes in the United States. Diabetes is highly prevalent, affecting about 7% of the entire population. Dr Saudek overviewed recent developments in diabetes treatment from an endocrinologist’s perspective. Dr Ciulla described superoxide overproduction as the key underlying mechanism uniting the various metabolic pathways involved in the pathophysiology of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME). Dr Aiello reviewed the results of recent clinical trials for new treatments for DR/DME, and outlined the study design for several ongoing trials. A extended panel discussion of questions from the audience concluded the symposium.
