Laboratory Tests to Order at the Initial Diagnosis of Diabetes

Type 1

Fasting plasma glucose OR random plasma glucose

A1C

Fasting lipid profile: total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides

Serum creatinine in adults; in children if proteinuria is present*

Urinalysis: ketones, protein,* sediment

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)

Type 2

Fasting plasma glucose OR random plasma glucose

A1C

Fasting lipid profile: total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides

Serum creatinine*

Urinalysis: ketones, glucose, protein,* sediment; culture if abnormal microscopic findings or symptoms of infection are present

Microalbuminuria*

*Tests for diabetic nephropathy
