ADA Screening Schedule for Distal Symmetric Polyneuropathy (DPN)

Recommendations:

All patients should be screened annually for DPN, starting at the time of diagnosis.

Simple clinical tests (eg, monofilament, tuning fork, palpation) can be used to test for DPN. Need for electrophysiological testing is rare.

Inspection of insensate feet should be conducted every 3-6 months. If abnormalities are detected, a referral for special footwear, a preventive specialist, or podiatric care should be provided.
