Before Diabetes: Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Prediabetic Conditions
Because type 2 diabetes has a long preclinical phase that can be identified through simple procedures, there are many opportunities to identify it early and intervene to prevent or delay it, as well as to prevent complications. The Diabetes Prevention Program and other clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of both lifestyle and medication for the prevention and/or delay of type 2 diabetes. Because viable prevention options are available, screening and diagnosis of preclinical diabetes represents the best hope for reducing the burden of this condition.

Screening and Diagnosis of Prediabetes and Metabolic Syndrome
Prediabetes is the occurrence of subclinical deficits in glucose metabolism in patients who have an increased risk for developing diabetes and related complications. Metabolic syndrome is the clustering of symptoms that places patients at risk for both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, as well as increased mortality from either cardiovascular disease or all causes. It is also known as insulin resistance syndrome.
